I choose this painting because to me it has a very powerful message. It says stop bullying over her mouth, this could mean many different things. My interpretation of this is that her mouth is covered because no body is talking about stopping bullying anymore because they are assuming no one is getting bullied anymore. I like this piece also because the names. We as get called these names everyday sometimes as jokes from our friends sometimes as deliberate insults. Most of the time we are able to brush it off, but everyone has insecurities. When someone says something about something that you are already insecure about you can’t brush it off it stays with you. I really see that in this piece it shows all the names you cant brush off and the ones that stick with you. This piece is all about the things that you cant let go off and that deals directly with bullying.
This piece uses quite a few of visual techniques to improve the pieces effectiveness and general look. A few of these are;
The lighting and glare. The corner of the painting seems very bright and this is shown through out the painting as the sun. It creates a lens flare as you can see in the bottom left hand corner. This makes the piece seem to have a more realistic feel because it allows the shadows to have an origin point and for features like her hair to be reflective and have a different contrast in relation to the rest of her hair and body.
The use of the negative space. The negative space of this painting isn’t overpowering or distracting but helps draw the attention to the focus. It also help the lighting and glow effect because it tappers as it gets to the border making it seem to get darker.
The glowing effect of the focus. This effect is reinforced by the lighting and negative space to allow the focus to really draw your eye to what you are supposed to. It is a change in lighting and brightness around the focus to draw your eye to it.
These little touches and visual techniques really help the pieces effectiveness and improve the piece itself.
