the power of words by Gavin Mccarthy
Gavin McCarthy was is a graphic designer who lives in Toronto, Canada. He works in illustration in children’s books but has also been involved with video game developing. He has been in this industry for 7 successful years.
I know he is a reliable source because he has produced many pieces of art that I had heard of before using him an author in this project
I choose this piece because it really shows how cruel kids can really be. This piece shows a monster breathing fire at a kid, this to me shows the monster that kids can become and the fire is their arsenal of names meant to hurt you. This is an example of a metaphor in a painting, which I have never seen before. I really like this painting because it also shows how defenseless kids are. The child in this painting is just cowering in fear, but what I think it means is that he is not able to escape the torture and judgment from those around him. The deeper meanings of this piece are what I like most about it and that makes very effective. This piece is all about how kids can be cruel and how defenseless they are which deals with bullying directly.
This painting relies heavily on the metaphors in it, but these metaphors come across significantly better because of the visual techniques used by the author. A few examples of these include;
The use of the negative space. The focuses of this piece is really highlights because of the negative space. The use of one solid colour and just having different amounts of light really help draw attention to what is important in this piece. The negative spaces contrast in colours because of the shadows is very interesting as well, it makes the fire seem more alive.
The lighting, it makes the fire seem alive adding to the different amounts of shadows around the focus. The fire itself seems to be giving off a light because the negative space is lighter and darker showing a shadow effect.
The Monster in general. It has braces, a watch and acne on its face. These things reinforce that the monster is just another child this is very smart of the author to do. It makes the monster into a metaphor and makes it more effective as a whole.
Each of these things helps to reinforce the meaning of the piece and the effectiveness of it.
