The boy by caleb borwick
There once was a boy who was sad
Who was beaten daily by dad
He went to school,
Was treated like a fool
We were sorry for this lad.
The teachers and kids at school,
Knew the boy’s dad was cruel,
Nothing was done,
Goodbye to the son,
Now who looks like the fools?
This poem takes the form of a limerick. A limerick was rather difficult to write due to the large amount of rules and restrictions that apply to them. I choose to write in the form of a limerick because I find they stick with you easier, and have really nice flow. I also really like the rhythm caused by the rhyme scheme. I have also used a few rhetorical devices to increase the effectiveness of this poem a few specific ones are;
“Who was beaten daily by dad” this is an example of a hyperbole because he probably wasn’t beaten everyday. This is just help emphasis the sadness and harshness of the poem.
“Was treated like a fool” and “now who looks like the fools?” this is an example of amplification. Amplification is the repeated use of words or a phrase. Having it come back with the comment “now who looks like the fools” after it mentions the boy commits suicide, makes it very effective and more powerful. I choose to do it like that because it really brings out how people can directly affect others and that being a bystander can be almost worse that being the bully themselves.
I was trying to make the point of how being a bystander can be a terrible thing as well. As mentioned in line six and seven everyone knew that his father beat him but no one was willing to do anything about it. Being a bystander can be worse than bullying sometimes if you don’t help who will and things like suicide could happen just like in this poem. I think I proved this in the poem, people most of the times aren’t willing to help others unless it affects them or they benefit from it. This is a major problem in our society, how selfish we are humans. This is something that hopefully will change in the future.
